Max Walters has played a grand total of nine games in his Chico State men’s basketball career, but the freshman guard is already proving he can be counted on to provide the Wildcats with some valuable minutes during the 2022–23 season. The Soquel product was particularly productive against Pacific Union College, coming off the bench to rack up 14 points in just 17 minutes of action in the ’Cats’ 94-53 pasting of the Pioneers at Acker Gym. The career-best effort makes Walters the latest Wildcat of the Week. Â
Â
One of four Wildcats to score in double figures against Pacific Union, Walters connected on four of his six 3-point attempts and was 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Walters also contributed to the ’Cats’ attack by snaring six rebounds and doling out a pair of assists—both also career highs—as Chico State rolled to its third home win to even its season record at 5-5.
Â
In limited minutes so far in 2022–23, Walters is averaging 2.9 points and 1.9 rebounds a game. He’s making a case for increased playing time, though, thanks to shooting 42 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the 3-point arc.
Â
Walters and the Chico State men’s basketball team will take time off for the holidays, but will be return to action—and CCAA conference play—Sunday, January 1, when the Wildcats battle Stanislaus State at Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock.
