A month ago, Chico State women’s basketball 3-point specialist Morgan Mathis was struggling to find her shooting stroke, missing her first eight shots of the season from beyond the arc. Fast forward to December, and the Clovis product is now one of the hottest 3-point shooters in the entire California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Mathis had her long distance skills on full display against Pacific Union College, knocking down four treys and scoring a team-high 20 points in a decisive ’Cats win. Her performance not only dazzled the Acker Gym crowd, it also netted Mathis the latest Wildcat of the Week award.
Mathis connected on seven of her 14 field goal attempts in Chico State’s 97-35 victory over the Pioneers, with her 20 points matching her single game career high as a Wildcat.
Mathis entered the Sunday afternoon contest midway through the first quarter and came out firing, draining her first three 3-point attempts. She also grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists to help the ’Cats raise their season record to 7-4.
Over her last two games, Mathis is averaging an impressive 15.5 points a game, shooting 55 percent from the field, and has connected for seven 3-pointers. Eleven games into the 2022–23 season, she is tied for third on the team with 12 treys, bringing her career 3-point total to 60.
Mathis and the Chico State women’s basketball team returns to action following the holiday break, when the Wildcats travel to Turlock Sunday, January 1 to take on CCAA rival Stanislaus State.
