For the Chico State women’s basketball team to be successful during the 2022–23 campaign, the Wildcats will be relying on many of their veteran players to set a productive and winning tone both offensively and defensively. Myli Martinez has quickly demonstrated that she is more than willing to accept that challenge. The senior guard was the team’s most consistent scorer in the two season-opening games of the CCAA/PacWest Tipoff Challenge, and her efforts have earned Martinez Wildcat of the Week honors.
Martinez averaged 14 points a contest and connected on five 3-pointers against Fresno Pacific and Dominican University to kick off the season, helping lead the Wildcats to a tournament split at the Conlan Center in San Rafael.
The senior guard opened the 2022–23 campaign Friday with a 15-point performance while also grabbing three rebounds against Fresno Pacific. Martinez came back on Saturday to drain three 3-pointers, grab a pair of boards, and dole out an assist on the way to a 13-point night in Chico State’s 68-62 victory over Dominican University.
For her Chico State career, Martinez is averaging 6.9 points a game, and her 104 treys has her knocking on the door of the program’s all-time top 10 3-pointers list. Martinez also owns a career 82.7 shooting percentage at the free throw line.
Martinez and the Wildcats play their first home games of the season this weekend when they host the CCAA/GNAC Challenge at Acker Gym. Friday at 7 p.m. the ’Cats go up against Western Oregon, then Saturday at 1 p.m. take on the Saints of Saint Martin’s University.
