Track & field spotlight shines Saturday on Wildcat Invitational

Chico State hosts annual event at University Stadium

CHICO – Both the Chico State men's and women's track & field teams have experienced quite a bit of success during their last two road meets…but there's just something about competing in the familiar surroundings of University Stadium that always seems to bring out the very best in the Wildcats. Over 80 Chico State athletes will get the chance to shine in front of the hometown crowd this Saturday at the annual Wildcat Invitational, with field events starting at 11 a.m. and races beginning at noon.

Fans unable to attend the meet in person can track the results online through the Wildcat Athletics website. CLICK HERE for Live Results.

The Chico State men's and women's squads will look to add to the combined nine NCAA Provisional qualifying marks already posted this season, while also trying to achieve marks that will result in changes to the Wildcat record books. The 'Cats will be competing Saturday against athletes from fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schools Cal State East Bay, Humboldt State and Cal State Monterey Bay, as well as representatives from Southern Oregon University, William Jessup, UC Merced and Butte College.

The Wildcat men will have three 4x100-meter relay teams in action Saturday, while the distance runners will toe the line in abundance in both the 800- and 1,500-meter run. Lane Andrews, Phill Bailey, Dalton McBride and Justin Woo will compete for the 'Cats in the pole vault, with Bailey also entered in the 4x100, 4x400, discus and javelin events.

Andrews, Sean Goetzl and Tristan Lake will anchor Chico State in the hurdles, while Scott Pater, Ryan Troudy, Colton George, Mikey Macaluso, Brett Crider, Derek Taylor and Ron Taylor will handle the jumping events for the Wildcats.

Andrews and Bailey will be joined by Chico State teammates Nick Denton, Michael Haddorff and Dallas Wilson in the discus, with the final three also competing in the shot put and javelin.

The Chico State women feature no less than 27 athletes competing in multiple events at Saturday's Wildcat Invitational. Brooke Whitburn is entered in five events, with Aryana Carvalho-Mires, Ruby Davis, Kylie Herman and Melanie O'Brien each competing in four events.

Davis, Ashley Jones, Kristen Brunk and Aja Erskine will spearhead the Wildcats in the day's sprint events, with Emily Denton, Tibire Edwards, Tori Mason and Jenavieve Turners entered in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Chico State will be well represented in Saturday's distance races, with Alex Burkhart, Hannah Dorman, Sadie Gastelum, Lora James, Danielle Oden, Quetta Peinado, Jessica Valera and Olivia Watt toeing the starting line for the 800- and 1,500-meter runs.

Chico State will have two teams entered in the women's 4x100-meter relay, and four squads ready to battle it out in the 4x400-meter relay. The Wildcat quartet of Taylor Sack, Morgan Madigan, Annelise Spargo and Kayla Vasquez will compete in the pole vault; Dominique Powell and Lauren Schnelli will take part in the high jump, and a half-dozen 'Cats – Whitburn, Herman, Carvalho-Mires, Davis, O'Brien and Jessa Gansberg – will compete in the long jump.

Seven Chico State athletes are entered in the women's javelin, with Jami Duarte Stephanie Hahn and Kelsey Short anchoring the Wildcat competitors in the shot put, hammer and discus.

Ideal weather conditions should prevail for the Wildcat Invitational – a mixture of sun and clouds with temperatures in the mid- to upper-70s are expected.
