TURLOCK, Calif. – The Chico State men's golf team completed the first 36 holes of play Monday at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Golf and Country Club, sitting in second place in the 11-team field at 3-over par. The Wildcats opened with a 292 (+8) in round one before improving to a 279 (-5) in the second round. Chico State trails tournament leader Cal State San Bernardino by seven strokes heading into Tuesday's final round.
Chico State leaned on consistency throughout the day, leading the field in total pars made with 122 and recording the fewest bogeys among all teams. The Wildcats totaling only eight birdies or better in the opening round improved by adding 17 birdies in the second round. Naoki Easterday and Ty Weaver both rank inside the top five in the field in pars made.
Easterday paced the Wildcats with rounds of 71 and 71 to sit tied for seventh, just two shots off the individual lead heading into the final round. Weaver posted steady rounds of 74 and 74 to finish the day tied for 25th.
Vineet Vallamsetty delivered one of the best rounds of the day in the afternoon, bouncing back from a 76 (+5) with a 67 (-4) that featured five birdies and just one bogey to move into a tie for 10th. Vallamsetty said he struggled with consistency off the tee and lacked confidence on the greens during the opening round, but made small adjustments to his putting in round two that helped build his confidence. He added that he felt more relaxed in the second round, allowing him to play more freely and with greater confidence.
Alex LemMon rallied in the second round, following a 77 (+6) with a 67 (-4) to climb into 13th place after carding five birdies and one bogey, while senior Giuseppe Aliotti opened with an even-par 71 then added a 76 (+5) to sit tied for 22nd.
Competing as individuals, Cooper Hambrick is tied for 25th after rounds of 75 and 73, while Collin Statler posted rounds of 76 and 75.
The Wildcats return to the course Tuesday for the final 18 holes, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start as they look to close the gap and contend for the team title.
