Holley and Zemmo Lead Scoring, Cat's Unable to Topple Toros

CARSON, Calif. – The Chico State men's basketball team battled wire to wire Thursday night but came up just short, falling 83–77 to No. 15 Cal State Dominguez Hills in a CCAA matchup on Jan. 29, 2026, at the Torodome. The Wildcats drop to 6–12 overall (4–9 CCAA), while the Toros improve to 15–5 (10–3 CCAA).

How it happened

Chico State set the tone early with efficient offense inside, trading leads throughout a competitive first half. The Wildcats leaned heavily on their interior attack, scoring consistently in the paint and matching Dominguez Hills possession for possession before heading into halftime trailing just 40–35.

The Wildcats came out strong in the second half, opening with crisp ball movement and aggressive drives to the rim. Robel Zemmo and Chris Holley sparked the offense, combining for timely baskets as Chico State briefly pushed ahead and stayed within one possession for much of the period. Chico shot over 59 percent from the field on the night and totaled 48 points in the paint, repeatedly challenging the Toros at the rim.

Dominguez Hills countered with perimeter shooting and late execution. The Toros knocked down key three-pointers and capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch, answering every Wildcat push. Chico State trimmed the deficit to two in the final minute after a fast-break layup, but Dominguez Hills sealed the game with a late jumper and free throws in the closing seconds.

Despite the outcome, Chico State showed resilience against one of the conference's top teams, forcing turnovers, sharing the ball effectively, and staying within striking distance until the final horn.
