CHICO, Calif. - The Wildcats entered the weekend series with the Seawolves looking to claim a few wins to close out the 2025 season.
Following their series against the Pioneers in East Bay, the 'Cats officially fell out of reach of a CCAA Tournament berth, with a single spot up for grabs in the final week of games. The Wildcats record jumped to 21-23 (13-21, CCAA) with their split against SSU on Friday.
The Seawolves are the fourth-place team in the CCAA but top two in batting and pitching, showing their all-around strength as a program.
Game 1 | Chico 1, SSU 0
The series opening win was full of resilience from the 'Cats defense and an outstanding complete game performance from Amelie Valdez in the circle. Valdez nearly pitched a no-hitter, allowing a single hit with three retired Seawolves in seven innings.
Chico State's offense tallied five hits against the Seawolves, but it took until the sixth inning for the 'Cats to get runners in scoring position and capitalize on solid plate appearances.
Hannah Levy was the lead runner following a double to right field in the sixth inning as Marissa Anderson powered a shot over the center fielder that drove the winning run home.
Game 2 | Chico 1, SSU 7
Kylie Loertscher and Chloey Swenson pitch commendable outings as the 'Cats struggle against the second-strongest offensive team in the CCAA.
The 'Cats had a difficult time connecting to pitches against the CCAA's second best pitching staff, with the 'Cats best spark of offense coming in the 6th inning. Chico State found a way to fill the bases on multiple occasions, however, their challenges lied in too many runners left-on-base.
Aiyana Curry collected two hits, with the 'Cats third hit coming off the bat of Itzell De Los Rios.
Chico State softball will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, honoring the career of Elisa Haas prior to the first pitch of the second day of the series. The celebration begins at 11:45 am at Wildcat Softball Field.
