Worth the Wait! No. 20 ‘Cats Sweep Broncos After Late Start

CHICO, Calif. – There was uncertainty on whether the final game of the CCAA baseball series between No. 20 Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona was going to be played on Sunday due to showers.

Two hours after the scheduled 11 a.m. first pitch, the Wildcats successfully got Nettleton Stadium playable and as the day progressed, the sun came out and Chico State secured a 7-5 win over Cal Poly Pomona to sweep the four-game series for the first time since 2008.

Chico State exits the weekend 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Pomona heads back south 6-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Rocco Borrelli had a good outing against the Broncos, throwing six innings with six strikeouts and no walks. He only gave up a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Tyce Ochs only gave up a two-run home run in the seventh and freshman Dylan Adelman, one of the two heroes in game three of the series, came back and pitched two shutout innings for his first collegiate save.

While the Broncos did get runs across, the Wildcats had led for eight innings. They got their first lead in the second inning. With Phoenix Casias on third and Carson Case on first, Case got into a rundown and provided enough time for Casias to score the run before the inning was officially over.

The fourth inning saw Chico State hit three-straight two-out RBI singles by Ernie Arambula, Thade Miller and Troy Kent to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead. One inning later and with two down, Michael Baker tripled and after Casias drew a walk to put runners at the corners, a failed pickoff play allowed Baker to score. Case singled up the middle to bring home Casias to further Chico State's lead 6-3. Miller opened the sixth inning with a walk, stole second and scored on Troy Kent's third single that went through the middle, extending the Wildcats' lead to 7-3.

Chico State finished the day with 11 hits, Cal Poly Pomona had five.

The Wildcats will hop on the bus and make the short drive to Rohnert Park to play a four-game series with Sonoma State. Game one is Friday at 2 p.m. KPAY will only have the Saturday and Sunday games in the series with Jonathan Kurman on the call. The three remaining games will be on KPAY Sports AM 1290 and 102.9 FM or its sister station Newstalk 93.9 FM.
