CHICO, Calif. – All five of Chico State's starters reached double digits in scoring Thursday night, but it wasn't quite enough as the Wildcat women's basketball team saw their eight-game win streak come to an end after No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona escaped Acker Gym with a 90-84 overtime result.
The Wildcats and Broncos end the evening with matching records, moving to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA, forcing the two to share second place in the conference standings.
Although a pair of successful free throws by Ciarah Michalik tied the game at 84 with 2:16 left in overtime, the Broncos went the rest of the way on a 6-0 run. Breanne Ha made a pair of free throws to break the tie and Kalaya Buggs scored four points, including two on the charity stripe within the final seconds of the game to pad the Broncos' distance from the Wildcats.
Makenzi Laporte and Jordan Allred led the effort as far as scoring and rebounding went. Laporte had 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double while her fellow senior Allred dropped in 18 points and went to the glass eight times. Meadow Aragon, despite missing most of the first half due to foul trouble, finished with 13 points. Michalik contributed to a dozen points and Jadence Clifton had 11 even though she fouled out of the game early into the overtime.
Buggs and former Stanislaus State player Cookie Marques had quite an evening for Cal Poly Pomona. Buggs scored 22 points, with nine of them coming from the free throw line, and Marques had 20 points.
Both teams had near identical results from the field. Chico State shot 33-for-73 (45.2 percent) from the field while Cal Poly Pomona made 47.8 percent (32-for-67). The Wildcats held a 37-35 edge in the rebounding column and both sides only committed 10 turnovers throughout the evening.
Each team also had to climb out of big deficits. Chico State had led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter while Cal Poly Pomona led by as many as eight.
The Wildcats remain home on Saturday as they welcome Cal State San Bernardino to Acker Gym for a 1 p.m. showdown. The Coyotes make their way to Chico following a 76-67 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt tonight.
