Aragon Dominant as Wildcats Get Back on Win Column

CHICO, Calif. – Meadow Aragon scored 28 points for a new career high and added a dozen rebounds along the way as the Chico State women's basketball team came through in the second half to beat Cal State San Bernardino 94-73 in Acker Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats have shown to have moved on from Thursday's overtime loss to Cal Poly Pomona, improving 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the CCAA. The Coyotes, meanwhile, drop their overall record to 3-10 and are now 2-6 in the CCAA.

Jordan Allred also had a double-double on the afternoon, tallying 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to match her career-high set last season. Jadence Clifton contributed with 16 points and Makenzi Laporte scored nine of her 15 points on the free throw line.

While going 4-for-5 on the line, Aragon's biggest performance was in the paint, going a perfect 12-for-12 in field goals.

Chico State was dominant in both shooting and rebounding. Starting with the offense, the Wildcats went 30-for-58 and had 44 rebounds. On the other side, Chico State limited San Bernardino to 41.4 percent (29-for-70) and 21 boards.

Jaida Jackson led the effort on the scoring front for the Coyotes with 17 points, but it was the bench led by Princess Cassell that did much of the scoring. Cassell ended the day scoring 15 of the bench's 26 points.

San Bernardino started the game off winning the opening tip and immediately making the first basket. The Coyotes won the opening quarter 23-22, but Aragon made a layup 25 seconds into the second period to give the Wildcats their first lead in the game. Chico State would go on a 9-0 run in span of 2:39 to expand its lead to 37-26 with less than 3:30 to play in the half.

Chico State went into halftime leading 40-37. Both teams seemed to have a minor cold spell to start the second half. It wasn't until the 8:57 mark of the third quarter that Laporte made a pair of free throws to end at least the scoring slump. The third quarter would eventually belong to Chico State, outscoring San Bernardino 31-20 in the period, including a 17-5 run in the span of 5:20. Aragon and Allred combined for 15 points during that momentum.

The final five minutes of the game saw quite a bit of action, with Chico State outscoring San Bernardino 21-7 heading towards the finish line. Seven different Wildcats contributed to the scoring on that run.

The Wildcats will now conduct their longest road trip in the conference schedule with visits to Cal State San Marcos and Sonoma State. The swing begins in San Marcos, where the defending NCAA West Region champions are under new management following the departure of Renee Jimenez. The Cougars are coming off a 74-66 home loss to Cal State LA this afternoon to remain winless after 13 games played.
