Souza Strikes in Tie with Central Washington

Ellensburg, WASH. – To open up their first fall road trip, the Chico State women's soccer team traveled to Central Washington for their third non-conference matchup. Despite a strong offensive showing from Chico State, they claimed their first-season tie.

The Chico State Wildcats entered Thursday's game 1-1 after splitting the week against Regis and Colorado School of Mines. The Wildcats of Central Washington entered the match with a similar record of 1-1, toppling the Otters of CSUMB and dropping a tight match-up with #1 Point Loma.

Early into the first half, Chico State held a firm grip on the ball and created early chances against a slow-starting CWU side. After 10 minutes, the 'Cats of Chico State found their break, as Caroline Souza found space behind the back line and calmly slotted the ball in the lower right corner of the net for her first career goal. Junior Jiana Martin notched her first assist of the season after playing a perfectly weighted pass for Souza to push past the center defenders.

However, the lead was short-lived as the center referee's whistle was blown in the box for a penalty kick, which was rewarded to CWU. The freshman defender converted from the spot and leveled the game.

Chico State dominated offensively in the first half, out-shooting the home team 14-4, eventually tallying 23 total shots. Eleven of those attempts forced a save from the keeper, but Chico State could not find the net again despite the flurry of chances.

Jiana Martin, Avery Pieri, and Hannah Pieri all recorded five shots, the most each player has recorded in a single game during their careers.

Their road trip is not over yet, as the Chico State Wildcats will close out their non-conference trip with a match-up against a formidable Seattle Pacific squad at Interbay Soccer Stadium. Kickoff in Seattle is at 11:30 am; you can watch the live stream on YouTube or follow along with live stats; all links are available here.
