Toole Forces Draw With #8 Falcons in Seattle

Seattle, WASH. - Closing their trip to the Pacific Northwest, the Chico State women's soccer team picked up their second season tie against a strong No.8 Seattle Pacific Falcons side that has dominated their non-conference games early into the season.

The Falcons have played two previous non-conference matchups against Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State last week, taking both games with multiple goal margins. The Wildcats entered Saturday's game with a 1-1-1 record after a tie with Central Washington on Thursday.

SPU is slated to take second in the GNAC conference this year, and the Wildcats brought the energy to their home turf on Saturday. The 'Cats set the tone with a 10th-minute goal from Natalie Mendoza in the 18-yard box after an excellent layoff pass from Jiana Martin. That marks the first goal of Mendoza's year and Martin's second assist on their trip to Washington after assisting Caroline Souza's first career goal against CWU.

The Falcons climbed back and nabbed a goal in the 32nd minute to level it before halftime. The home side grabbed a second goal not long after the second half started to gain the advantage.

Just before the 80th-minute mark, the Wildcats had a free kick from 40 yards out lobbed into the box, and a crashing Camryn Toole capitalized on a poor clearance from the Falcons to tie up the game one more.

Emma Hofmann saved seven Falcon chances, a season high for the senior goalkeeper. Freshman Gabby Starr nabbed her first start for the Wildcats, taking the field for the full 90 minutes.

The game saw no more goals from either side, and the Wildcats saw two ties from the northwest. Chico State will return on the road, traveling to Rocklin for a non-conference matchup against PacWest opponents Jessup next Saturday.
