Wildcats Close Out Season at the West Regional

AZUSA - The curtain closes on the Chico State women's basketball season at the hands of a formidable Montana State University Billings team with a score of 86-55.

A Wildcat squad that overcame challenges and adversity throughout the 2023-24 campaign, earning the program's first NCAA West Regional appearance in a decade. Despite the outcome, the 'Cats battled until the final buzzer—earning valuable experience and insight into what kind of competition awaits in the postseason.

Following their exit, the Wildcats conclude the season with a 21-10 record, recording their best finish since 2013.

The GNAC regular season champion Yellowjackets have an extensive record in the last decade on the national stage, with four appearances and one West Region title since 2014.

This Wildcats squad was led by five outstanding seniors: Brandy Huffhines, Morgan Mathis, Zhane Duckett, Stella Rollo, and Jazmyne Lillie.

Zhane Duckett opened up the game with a strong pair of layups, opening up a promising start to the big dance. A quick response from the Yellowjackets showcased their athleticism, reinforcing why they only faltered six times throughout the season.

Duckett recorded a team-high ten points and tallied five assists. She hangs up her Wildcats jersey after leading the program in points, assists, and steals.

Despite the growing margin, Chico State continued to compete on both ends of the court, refusing to allow a shot to go uncontested.

Brandy Huffines refused to back down from the tight defensive structure of the Yellowjackets, shifting through the court to earn a sliver of breathing room and scoring eight contested baskets.

Makenzie Laporte and Jordan Allred added eight points each to the Wildcats, battling for each basket. Morgan Mathis hit two long-range baskets off the bench, bringing her season total from beyond the arc to 49.

In four minutes on the court, Kaila Woo scored both field goals she attempted for four points in the final game of her freshman season. Jazmyne Lillie was 1-for-2 from the field in her final appearance with the 'Cats, driving at the 'Jackets without hesitation.

Head coach Brian Fogel had high praise for his entire Wildcats team, excited for the future of Chico State women's basketball.
