SAN MARCOS, Calif. - In their final game in Southern California, the Chico State women's soccer team could not hold onto their early lead, falling to the Cougars 2-1 in San Marcos.
An early own goal from the home side in the second minute of the match gave the Wildcats an early lead, but the 'Cats were having a tough time finding their offense going forward. The second half proved more fruitful offensively for Chico State, recording all three shots on goal in the final forty-five minutes.
Caroline Souza, Madison Schuler, and Avery Pieri were the Wildcats who threatened the Cougars goalkeeper with shots on the net.
Two goals from the home side in the 34th and 79th minutes turned the tables on Sunday. Claire Schnabel did her best to keep the Cougars out of her net, making eight saves and facing fifteen shots—the Sophomore has shown great confidence in the latter half of the season since starting in goal for the 'Cats.
The Wildcats were not without their chances off set pieces, with seven corners throughout Sunday's match. Unfortunately, the Cougars back line continued to defend their net, minimizing all danger despte the dangerous crosses sent in from Chico State.
With the loss in San Marcos, the Chico State women's soccer team is out of qualifying range for the CCAA Championships. The Wildcats will close out the 2024 season with a game in Turlock against Stanislaus State on Thursday; kickoff is at 11:30 a.m. at Warrior Stadium.Â
