TURLOCK, California. - An unsuccessful rally on the road last weekend saw the chances of the Chico State women's soccer team qualifying for a conference bid vanish. But that did not stop the Wildcats from giving all they had in their final season match, sending the seniors off with a 4-2 win against Stanislaus State.
To make it better, four seniors had a hand in each goal that saw their careers end with one final win in a Chico State jersey.
Avery Pieri proved her determination to honor her fellow seniors with one final victory, scoring her second brace of the season and keeping the Warriors on their heels throughout the match.
The Warriors leaped to an early lead over the Wildcats, scoring in the 10th and 15th minutes to give the 'Cats a scare.Â
Pieri cut the deficit to a single goal in the 28th minute after the Warrior's defense allowed her too much space and, with the ball on her favored left foot, left the keeper watching the ball soar over her head into the net.
A handball in the box awarded Chico State a chance to tie the game, and Avery Pieri stepped up to the spot, calmly converting for her second goal.Â
The Warriors were visibly exhausted at the end of the season finale, but the Wildcats refused to slow down.
A dangerous cross from Gabby Starr in the 80th minute threatened the Warrior's comfort of defending. Natalie Mendoza punished the relaxed back line with a powerful header that scorched the net for the game-leading goal.
The third goal only gave the Wildcats more energy after Brynn Howard made an aggressive dribble towards the home team's net, slotting Jiana Martin in on goal with the keeper to beat and delivering the final blow in a 4-2 win.
Concluding the 2024 campaign with a 6-6-6 (3-5-3 CCAA) record, the Wildcats battled all season long, recording the most goals they scored in a single match on Thursday. Avery Pieri ends the season as the third-leading goal scorer in the CCAA with eight goals. Jiana Martin recorded the second most goals on the team, with four, and Natalie Mendoza was third with three goals in the season.
