ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Chico State women's basketball team came close to erasing a 14-point deficit but ran out of time as NCAA Division II newcomer Jessup held on to beat the Wildcats 48-44 in Warrior Arena on Saturday.
The Wildcats, who were handed their first defeat of the season after four games played, had a cold day on the floor. They shot 27.3 percent (15-for-55) from the field, got out-rebounded (42-34) for the first time of the season, and were guilty of 20 turnovers.
Jordan Allred carried Chico State as far as scoring goes, dropping 25 points while the rest of the team scored less than 10. She also had six rebounds and steals each.
Jessup, which improved to 2-2, did not put up any runaway numbers. The Warriors ended up shooting 35.3 percent (18-for-51) while committing 22 turnovers. Chico State was only able to collect 16 points from Jessup's mistakes.
Neither side had many trips to the free throw line. Chico State went a perfect 7-for-7 while Jessup went 6-of-12.
Chico State's only lead in the game was nearly four minutes in, when Allred made a layup to move the Wildcats ahead 7-5. Jessup went on a 13-0 run the rest of the period to take an 18-7 lead.
The Warriors would build its largest lead at 14 (25-11) with 4:27 left in the first half.
Although Chico State edged Jessup in the third quarter 11-10, the Wildcats found enough momentum to get the deficit down to three with 3:56 to play. Moulos made one free throw to give Jessup a 46-41 lead with 24 seconds left. Both sides were unable to score a bucket. Andrea Jovicevic got one free throw to make it a six-point game and Jadence Clifton hit a 3-pointer to cut it in half with five seconds left. Jaclyn Kulow made one free throw with three seconds left to practically secure the game for Jessup.
The Wildcats' road trip continue next Saturday, when they head to San Francisco to play Academy of Art. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.

• Today was the first ever meeting between Chico State and Jessup.
• Head coach Brian Fogel, in his 17
th season at the helm, is 252-174 in his career.
• Jordan Allred came up three points short from her career high. She scored 28 points on two occasions last season, the first was at Cal State LA and the other was against San Francisco State in Acker Gym, which led her to being the CCAA Player of the Week.
