‘Cats Save a Point in 1-1 Draw With Toros

In their second CCAA Conference match of the season, Chico State women's soccer saved a draw with the Toros to close the opening weekend with a point during a 100-degree day.

Hannah Pieri was the savior in Sunday's showdown with Cal State Dominguez Hills, grabbing her first goal of the season with a strike that had too much power for the Toros keeper to handle. The Orangevale native fired 20 yards out, and what looked like a routine save turned into an equalizer for the Wildcats.

Pieri had been hungry for a goal this season after a handful of her strikes in the past weeks have nicked the woodwork or been a fingertip length from hitting the back of the net.

The visitors grabbed an early goal in the 7th minute on a clearance that took an unpredictable deflection toward the 'Cats' net and then headed in by a waiting striker near the goal.

Brynn Howard and Natalie Mendoza battled tirelessly in the midfield as the heat took a toll on all the players on the pitch. The 'Cats were still pressuring the visitors despite the unfavorable temperature, outshooting the Toros by 10 to 5 shots.

Madison Schuler, Howard, and Pieri all played the full 90 minutes on the pitch, battling on both sides of the field to grab the advantage and keep the Toros from taking the total three points.

After the final whistle, the score remained level 1-1, with the Wildcats record shifting to (3-2-4, CCAA 0-1-1). Cal State East Bay has taken an early lead to the conference with two wins over the weekend with three other programs trailing behind by two points in the standings.

The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend, heading to San Francisco State on Friday, followed by a trip to Monterey Bay to take on the Otters on Sunday.
