Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Rick Hoskin - Senior Athletics Communications Coordinator (rhoskin@csuchico.edu)

Women's Hoops Get Even with Sonoma

CHICO – Brandy Huffhines scored 18 points, Zhane Duckett had 14 and Jadence Clifton continued to be a key component off the bench with 11 points as the Chico State women's basketball team coasted to a 73-62 win over rival Sonoma State at Acker Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Chico (13-6, 9-4 CCAA) gets even with the Sonoma (11-9, 6-7 CCAA) after the Seawolves took the previous meeting in Rohnert Park seven weeks ago.

It turned out to be a great weekend for Clifton, who continued to be clutch off the bench after matching the same number points she scored in Thursday's critical win over first-place Cal State San Marcos two days ago. Today, she added four rebounds and three assists.

Though the Wildcats turned the ball over 19 times, it was made up on the shooting, hitting 49 percent (25-for-51) from the field while making 11 baskets from 3-point range, narrowly missing the season-high mark.

Chico State also dominated the glass, outrebounding Sonoma State 43-27. Huffhines led the effort in that column with seven boards.

Sonoma has been desperate as of late after coming in with three straight losses. The Seawolves did see the return of their best player in Alli McDonald, who was missed during the free fall. She ended up with 19 points. Sienna Cherwinski finished with 13 points and Emerson Herrmann had 10.

Both sides were neck-and-neck in the first quarter. It was tied at 23 in the second period until Chico State went on a 14-3 run, including nine straight, within the final 4:43 of the first half to take a 37-26 lead into intermission.

Chico State was able to maintain the double-digit lead the entire second half, even having led by as many as 21 points late in the third quarter.

The Wildcats continue their homestand Thursday as they welcome Cal State East Bay for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The Pioneers will be taking on Cal Poly Humboldt later tonight. Chico State came up with a 69-55 win over East Bay in Hayward earlier in the month.
