Unselfish Wildcats Cruise to Sixth Straight Win

CHICO – The Chico State women's basketball team put together quite a show moving the ball around the court as the Wildcats combined for a season-high 23 assists to romp Stanislaus State 75-57 at Acker Gym on Thursday evening.

All Wildcats saw action and seven of them had more than two assists throughout the evening. Chico State committed only 11 turnovers while maintaining a season-best plus-12 assist-turnover ratio.

It is the sixth straight win for Chico State, which improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the CCAA. The Warriors, meanwhile, were handed their third straight loss, dropping to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

In addition to dishing out the assists, the Wildcats were finding buckets as five players reached double figures in points. Jordan Allred led the way with 18 points, Stella Rollo, who started off cold, ended up finishing strong and scored a dozen points. Zhane Duckett, on a mission of reaching the millennial career milestone, had 11 points, needing 20 more for 1,000. Jiana Creswell and Ashleigh Barr each had 10 points.

Despite making only a trey, Makenzi Laporte kept busy on the glass, grabbing 10 of Chico State's 46 rebounds. Barr had seven to finish behind Laporte.

Stanislaus State's Mya Blake led the effort for the Warriors by scoring 20 points.

After going back-and-forth in the first two minutes, the Wildcats got the first bucket of the game and never looked back. Chico State had identical 17-10 scores in the first two periods to take a 34-20 lead into halftime.

The Warriors got to within eight in the early part of the third quarter, but the unselfish Wildcats flipped the tide and went on a 33-18 run to take a 23-point lead with four minutes left in the game. Creswell had eight points during that run to lead eight players who helped contribute to the run.

Chico State returns to the hardwood floor Saturday, welcoming Cal State Monterey Bay for a 1 p.m. opening tip. The unlucky Otters fell victim on a free throw with two seconds left to fall to Cal Poly Humboldt 64-63 at Lumberjack Arena tonight.
