'Cats Claim Second at Sonoma State Men's Invite

Ashman Leads the Way For Wildcats

BODEGA BAY, Calif. - Chico State men's golf packed up their clubs for a short trip to the coast of Bodega Bay to compete in the Sonoma State University Men's Invite. After a long summer of preparations, this is their first fall tournament of the year, and thanks to solid rounds from the 'Cats, they took home the second-place finish, just behind the hosting Seawolves.

Inclement weather delayed the start of Monday's round, and the pushed start forced the finish of round one to the morning of Tuesday.

Tyler Ashman led the Wildcats, shooting a 9-over 219 over the three rounds, with his final round missing par by a single stroke. His final round consisted of 6 birdies that helped him finish in the top five alongside four Seawolves.

Just behind Ashman was teammate Dakota Ochoa, who came in at 6th and just a single stroke behind at 220.

Sophomores Naoki Easterday and Giuliano Kaminski both shot 12 over through three rounds, finishing tied for 9th place. Kaminski recorded three birdies per round, ending with the same amount as fellow Wildcat Tyler Ashman for sixth in total birdies throughout the invite.

Representing as an individual, Giacomo Sorrentino was third in total birdies with eleven but finished tied for 14th with a 16-over 226.

The hosting Seawolves swept the top 4 spots, with Lucas Happy as the only golfer to shoot even par throughout the three rounds. Ending with a team score of 17 over 857, the hosts take the first fall invite of the 2023-2024 season.

Finishing just behind the Wildcats was Menlo with a 51-over 891 lead by Jack Stark, who completed his 54 holes with a 10-over 220.

Chico State has a quick turnaround for their next tournament in the fall segment of the season, traveling to Bellingham, Washington, for the WWU Invite hosted by Western Washington. Their next 54-hole competition takes place at the beginning of next week on September 25th & 26th at Bellingham Golf Course.
