PUEBLO, Colo.—The final day of the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships did not yield any huge rewards for members of the Chico State women's track & field team, but the Wildcats 4x400-meter relay team—already having distinguished itself as the first 4x4 squad in the program's history to reach the national competition—did not go away empty-handed, earning Second Team All-America honors Saturday at the Thunderbowl on the Colorado State University, Pueblo campus.
After qualifying for the 4x400 finals Friday, the Wildcat foursome of Savannah Bailey, Taylor Lee, Danielle Bacon, and Chloe Taylor notched a ninth place showing Saturday, finishing just a half-second shy of the quartet's program record in the event with a time of 3:43.52. That effort was enough to garner Second Team All-America accolades.
Marissa D'Atri and Hannah Tiffany were the first Wildcats to complete Saturday, toeing the line in the finals of the NCAA Track & Field Championships' 5,000-meter run. D'Atri, who scored Second Team All-America honors Friday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, came up short of reaching the podium in the 5k, finishing 14th overall with a time of 17:19.85. D'Atri ran in the middle of the pack through the entire race, but at the 2,200-meter mark had worked her way into eighth place. With six laps to go, though, D'Atri slipped back into 14th place, and stayed there for the remainder of the event.
Tiffany was never able to get untracked, beginning the 5k in the back of the pack and finishing 23rd overall, stopping the clock at 18:07.87.
