Rubio, Martins Record Crucial Marks in Azusa Ahead of National Championships

AZUSA, Calif. — Chico State's women's track & field team closed out the regular season with several strong performances at the APU Franson Last Chance meet, highlighted by improvements across sprints, distance, and field events.

On the track, Teresa Vasconcellos led the Wildcats in the sprints with a ninth-place finish in the 200 meters, clocking 24.20. Crystal Rosales followed in 12th at 24.42, while Emma Gaddy added a time of 25.27 and Tianna Thompson crossed in 25.47. In the 100 meters, Thompson posted a 12.31, with Madi Monroe close behind at 12.44. 

Gaddy also competed in the 400 meters, finishing 10th overall with a time of 56.44. In the 800 meters, Kaya Scuba recorded a 2:16.52 performance. 

The Wildcats showed strong depth in the 1500 meters, where Paulina Martins led the group with a time of 4:26.55 to place eighth. Sienna Bianchi followed in 10th at 4:26.83, while Scuba added another solid effort in 4:32.42. 

Chico State also delivered in the distance events, led by Martins' fourth-place finish in the 5000 meters with a time of 16:26.19. Isabel Rosales (17:03.00), Jasmine Fletcher (17:21.75), and April Anguiano (17:28.94) rounded out the Wildcats' entries. In the 10,000 meters, Kira Forsberg placed second overall in 35:32.18. 

Martin's time in the 5000m earned her an NCAA DII provisional mark in the event, boosting her into 13th in the nation and the highest ranked freshman in the nation for the distance event. 

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Olivia Beschorner ran 10:38.00 to place sixth, while Zoe Aitken finished 14th in 11:06.56. 

The 4x100-meter relay team of Tianna Thompson, Madi Monroe, Teresa Vasconcellos, and Crystal Rosales placed third with a time of 46.45. 

In the field events, Janey Rubio highlighted the day with a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.02 meters. Charlie Ham added a sixth-place finish at 3.52 meters. Rubio's mark was a personal best for the junior, breaking her previous mark of 3.90m, moving her into 14th in the nation with an NCAA DII provisional mark. 

Laila Florvilus competed in the high jump, clearing 1.62 meters. 

The selections for the 2026 NCAA DiI National Championships in Emporia, Kansas will be revealed on May 12th. The three-day championships is slated to take place from Thursday, May 21st to Saturday, May 23rd. The Wildcats expect a handful of selections to take part on the biggest stage, looking to add to their extending list of All-American athletes following last year's impressive showing in Pueblo, Colorado.
