TURLOCK – Coming off two good rounds in day one of the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, the Chico State men's golf team didn't produce solid numbers in Tuesday's final trip through the par-72, 6,668-yard Turlock Golf & Country Club, but the Wildcats did finish strong enough to take third place out of the 16 teams participating.
The 35
th-ranked Chico State team was only six strokes behind leader No. 24 Western Washington entering the final round, but the Wildcats combined for a 303 to drop its score to 882 and fall to third place. Western Washington maintained its lead and scored an 871 to win the tournament. No. 37 Simon Fraser had the best run in the tournament, scoring a 289 to leap seven spots, including the 'Cats, to take second place.
Dakota Ochoa, Naoki Easterday and Mark Noonan, who was competing as an individual, each penciled in a 74 for the best performance on the day. Ochoa was the only Wildcat to eagle a hole when he scored a 3 in a par-5 13
th hole. Easterday was the only individual on the Chico State lineup to go perfect in the back-9 including a birdie in that 13
th hole.
Tyler Ashman, who recorded 69 in both rounds Monday to move into first place, had a bit of a rough day. The junior ranked 41
st among individuals scored a 79 in the final round to drop his tournament score to a 1-over 217 to sixth in the individual board. No. 13 Jordan Lee of Western Washington held on to win medalist honors with a 4-under 212.
Giuliano Kaminski scored a 76 to finish the tournament with an 8-over 224 and keep him in the top 25 within the 96-player field. Landon Williams carded a 79 to round out the Wildcats.
Chico State will now turn its focus on the CCAA Championships held April 17-19 at the Victoria Club in Riverside. The 'Cats finished second in last year's conference championship appearance.
