CHICO – Four of Chico State women's basketball starters scored at least 15 points but Cal Poly Pomona was able to hold off the reeling Wildcats, 89-84, at Acker Gym Saturday afternoon.

Brandy Huffhines, coming off a career day in Thursday's win over Cal State San Bernardino, led the effort in scoring again, dropping 16 points. Makenzi Laporte, Jordan Allred and Zhane Duckett each had 15 points.

The Wildcats (4-3, 1-1 CCAA) shared the ball quite a bit this afternoon, recording 17 assists. Duckett had nine of them and was one short from a double-double.

The Broncos (4-2, 1-1 CCAA), meanwhile, also relied on their starters to do all the scoring. Jeanette Fine had 21 points, Sydney Nelson had 19 and Kalaya Buggs had 18. Reina Sausedo contributed to 14 points off the bench.

Cal Poly Pomona also dominated the rebounding department, beating the Wildcats on the glass 45-31.

Between nine lead changes and 11 times the game was tied, Cal Poly Pomona built the biggest lead in the game, an 83-73 score with 3:16 left in the game. An old-fashion 3-point play by Laporte followed by a pair of free throws from Jadence Clifton cut the deficit in half with little over a minute to go. Though the game was out of reach, Duckett hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it the 89-84 score.

The Broncos held a 41-40 lead at halftime.

Chico State will make its longest road trip of the conference schedule, visiting Sonoma State Thursday at 5:30 p.m. followed a flight to Cal State San Marcos for a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
