SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Wildcats concluded their final Southern California road trip with a conference match against Yotes on Sunday afternoon. Goals from Avery Pieri and Natalie Mendoza seal the win for Chico State, boosting their conference record to 2-1-1 and 7-3-1 overall.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Hofmann showcased an incredible performance in the net, making ten saves against the Yotes. San Bernardino's offense was lethal throughout the first half, with all seven shots forcing a save from Hofmann. The Wildcats shared in the offensive action, taking eight shots of their own in the first half.
Avery Pieri broke the deadlock, scoring her fourth goal of the season in the 59th minute of play. Klayre Barre recorded her weekend's second assist and third of the season.
Eleven minutes later, the Yotes broke through the 'Cats defense to tie up the match late in the 70th minute.
Only a minute later, Chico was on the attack in the Yotes' eighteen-yard box, with a foul being called just outside the left side of the box. Natalie Mendoza stood alone over the dead ball, a four-player wall standing together only ten yards away. Mendoza chose to take on the Yotes keeper and bent a right-footed shot to the back corner of the net, giving the visiting 'Cats the 2-1 lead.
There was no significant danger from either side for the remainder of the game, and Chico maintained the advantage, improving to 2-1-1 in conference play splitting the weekend in SoCal.
The red and grey will be back home on Sunday to take on Cal Poly Humboldt, following a road matchup on Thursday against the Seawolves, kickoff at 12:30 p.m., and can be livestreamed through the CCAA Network.
