‘Cats Rally in Second Half to Beat Sonoma

ROHNERT PARK – The Chico State women's soccer team went into halftime trailing by a goal. Forty-five minutes later, the Wildcats left Seawolf Soccer Field a 2-1 winner over Sonoma State Thursday afternoon.

Hannah Pieri had quite an afternoon for Chico State, scoring the tying goal in the 49th minute and assisting Madison Noll's eventual match-winner in the 61st minute.

The Wildcats improve to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCAA while keeping the defending co-champion Seawolves winless in conference play. Sonoma State falls to 2-6-3 overall and 0-4-1 in the league.

Sonoma State got on the board in the 38th minute. After a free kick from midfield landed inside the goal box, keeper Emma Hofmann tried punching the ball out but it softly found the head of Sonoma's Jenna Dean. Hofmann tried to slap the ball in order to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line but luckily it hit the right post and kept it in play. It was during a scrum inside the box that Kastle Lyman slotted it in for the goal.

The Wildcats tied the match in a beautiful yet awkward fashion. From the right side of the goal box, Camryn Toole threw the ball into play to Summer Baron. Baron battled a Seawolf defender but managed to get enough touch on it to send it back to Toole, who chipped in a high arch cross to the left side of the goal where Pieri, who was fighting through a Seawolf keeper and defender, jumped high enough to get her right knee to ricochet the ball into the goal.

The go-ahead goal started with a corner kick taken by Pieri, Noll was able to chest it in front of her and took a shot that went just under the crossbar and into the goal.

Chico State outshot Sonoma 17-13 overall, 8-6 on goal. Hofmann had to make five saves between the posts while on the other side Lolo Retsky made six.

The Wildcats return home for one match, a date with Cal Poly Humboldt Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The Lumberjacks played to a scoreless stalemate with Stanislaus State in Arcata.
