Gators Hold Off Reeling ‘Cats in Four Sets

CHICO – The Chico State volleyball team forced a fourth game but couldn't extend the match into a deciding set as San Francisco State held off the Wildcats 23-25, 14-25, 25-20, 17-25 at Acker Gym Saturday evening.

The Wildcats drop their overall record to 4-12 and 1-11 in the CCAA while the Gators improve to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

It was a busy day for Brooke Ono, who was credited for 36 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Lexi Carpenter had 17 digs and Taylor White had 11.

On the attack, Zoe DiNardo led the effort with 11 kills, Lauryn Osendorf was credited for nine kills along with a pair of blocks.

After losing the first two games, Chico State came out of intermission and was behind 7-1 to start the third set. The Wildcats were down 16-8 until they picked up the biggest rally of the season, going on a 13-2 run to move ahead 21-18. Although the Gators broke the rally with a kill, the Wildcats did win four of the remaining five rallies to take game four. Cassidy Herbert and Osendorf each had one kill and Taylor Whyte got a service ace to do the scoring for the Wildcats.

The homestand continues Friday with Cal Poly Pomona visiting Acker Gym for a 5 p.m. first serve. The Broncos, who lost at home to Sonoma State in five sets tonight, meets the Wildcats again after taking the last meeting in three sets at Kellogg Arena last month.
