GOODYEAR, Arizona—The Chico State men's golf team massacred the par 5s at Palm Valley Golf Club on Monday to position themselves among the top three teams at the Palm Valley Classic, but couldn't repeat that performance Tuesday. The Wildcats slipped into fifth place in the final standings. Chico State shot a combined 28-under par on the four par 5s Monday, but just 2-under as a team on those same holes Tuesday.
Still, the Wildcats' finished fifth in a field of 17 at 2-over par, one shot ahead of their nearest California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competition, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino. That's a significant note considering that the Wildcats will be vying for the CCAA Championships on Monday through Wednesday at Yocha Dehe.
Dakota Ochoa shot a 71 (following consecutive 70s on Monday) to lead all Chico State individuals and finish in sixth place at 5-under par. Ochoa tied for fourth two events ago and has now shot par or better in eight of his past 10 rounds.
