Brady breaks 3-Decades-Old School Pole Vault Record

Clears 5.12 meters (16-feet-9.5) Saturday at Beach Invitational

LONG BEACH—Nearly 30 years after Frank Lines set the Chico State record of 5.07 meters (16-feet-7.5) in the pole vault, there's a new name on top of the list. Cristian Brady cleared 5.12 meters (16-feet-9.5) at the Beach Invitational Saturday, setting a new program standard to highlight some fabulous efforts on the team's fourth straight day in Southern California.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Colton Cummings, Bryan Payne, Ethan Du, and Vincent Rinaldi ran a season-best 42.04. Ty Thomson scored a personal record of 11.14 in the 100 meters one day after registering a PR in the 400 meters, Parker Williams ran an impressive 49.70 in his season debut in the 400 meters a day after his PR in the 400-meter hurdles, and Bryant Williams bagged a season-best distance of 43.95 meters in the discus.

But the day's biggest moment belonged to Brady, who broke the record set by Lines in 1983. His mark is nearly a foot-and-a-half higher (0.42 meters) than any other student-athlete in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this season. He ranks 10th in the nation following Saturday's action. Brady had already enjoyed a nice week, having cleared 4.93 meters Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational, bettering his existing NCAA provisional qualifying mark and breaking into the Chico State all-time top 10 in the process. The sophomore from Covina kept climbing Saturday.

Joining Thomson in the 100-meter race were teammates Du (who finished in 11.09), Rinaldi (11.12), and Cummings (11.34). Joining Williams in the 400-meter dash were teammates Payne (49.45), Demetre Coffey (50.65), Ian Hackett (50.70), Calvin Igbanoi (50.71), and Rory Hatcher (51.77). Williams also ran in the 110-meter hurdles, posting a sub-14.50 for the third time this season with his finish in 14.49.

Also Saturday, Jorge Barajas recorded a 14.74-meter effort in the shot put, Adam Kasten went 13.26 meters in the triple jump, and Matthew Rodriguez cleared 4.52 meters in the pole vault.

The Wildcats are back in action next week, hosting the Chico Invitational at University Track Stadium. That will mark the team's final warmup before the CCAA Championships May 5–7 at Cox Stadium in San Francisco.
