The Chico State baseball team's record-breaking run of 10-run games ended Sunday in a 2-1 loss at the hand of Cal State San Marcos ace Garrett Apker, who fanned 11 in a complete-game four hitter. However, the Wildcats remain in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) at their midway point of conference play with a record of 22-6 overall and 15-4 in the CCAA.
It marked just the second home loss of the season for the Wildcats, now 16-2 at Nettleton Stadium. Chico State had won seven straight scoring in double digits a school record seven times in a row prior to Sunday's pitchers' duel.
Wildcats starter Braeden Gowdy and Apker matched zero for zero through the first five frames before Garrett Teisher's two-out RBI double in the sixth staked Cal State San Marcos to a 1-0 lead.
Chico State answered in the bottom half of the inning. Zach Morris was hit by a pitch leading off the inning, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Ernie Arambula's infield hit was thrown away at first base. Arambula was quickly caught stealing however, and then Jeffrey Ray was stranded on third after he reached on a bunt single and advanced all the way to third on an error. That was the last time a Wildcat was in scoring position.
Cal State San Marcos' game-winning rally started when Teisher doubled with two down and nobody on. Niko Diaz delivered the go-ahead single to make it 2-1.
Cal State San Marcos is now 10-16 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA.
Chico State will be on the road for a four-game series at Cal State LA next weekend, beginning with a single game Friday at 6 p.m. They'll be back home for a four-game set with Cal State Dominguez Hills April 8-10.
