WAHIAWA, Hawaii—The Chico State men's golf team appears to be taking a cue from the consistency of the wonderful Hawaiian waves that surround them this week. The Wildcats shot their second consecutive 9-under par 279 to claim the tournament title at the Southwest Airlines Hawaii Pacific University Shark Shootout Wednesday at Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa. Stanislaus State shot 14-under to tie the Wildcats at 18-under par, but Chico State won the drop-score tiebreaker .
Those teams left of the rest of the field, which was 16 deep, in the dust. Cal State San Marcos finished third, 10 shots behind, at 8-under par.
Tyler Ashman shot 4-under and earned co-medalist honors with Stanislaus State's Chris Ebster at 9-under par for the tournament. Ebster earned the first-place trophy tiebreaker. Dakota Ochoa carded a 5-under par 67 to lead the Wildcats Wednesday and finished in a three-way tie for third at 8-under for the tournament. Mark Noonan and Naoki Easterday shot even-par 72s. Noonan finished tied for 20
th at 2-under.
The first-place finish is Ashman's first as a collegiate. The junior from Clovis' previous best finish was a tie for fourth at last year's Western Washington Invitational.
This marked the Wildcats' second win in four events thus far in 2022-23. They entered the event ranked No. 40 in the nation, but performed better than seven teams ranked inside the top 40.
They'll have a chance to do the same on Friday and Saturday as the same 16 teams compete at the Southwest Airlines Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at Waikaloa Beach Golf Club in Waikoloa on the Big Island.
Dakota Ochoa shot a team-best 67 Wednesday and finished in a tie for third place at 8-under par, one stroke behind teammate and co-medalist Tyler Ashman.
