Wildcat woes continue, fall to Cal State San Marcos in three sets

Chico State volleyball drops 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 decision to Cougars

SAN MARCOS—The month of October has been a frustrating one for the Chico State volleyball team. The Wildcats have been working to improve and has never stopped competing, but they just haven't been able to find the right combination to return the 'Cats to the winner's circle. It was more of the same in Friday afternoon's road contest against Cal State San Marcos, as the host Cougars withstood Chico State's non-stop battling to down the Wildcats 25-13, 25-15, 25-19.

Friday's loss dropped Chico State to 3-17 on the season and 1-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State San Marcos improved to 7-13 overall and 6-7 in CCAA play.

Zoe DiNardo and Jane Mcnulty led the Wildcats, racking up six kills apiece; DiNardo also led Chico State with seven digs on the afternoon. Nariah Prescott and Gretta Kirkby contributed five and four kills, respectively, while Brooke Ono and Caitlyn Eichhorst combined for 27 assists for the 'Cats.

Chico State came out swinging and spread the offense around in the opening set, using kills by DiNardo, Mcnulty, Brooklynn Anderson, Lauryn Osendorf, and Taylor Whyte to build an early 10-6 lead. Cal State San Marcos countered with a 9-0 run to go up 15-10, and despite kills by DiNardo and Bree Rodriguez, the Wildcats could get no closer than four the rest of the way. With the score 17-13, the Cougars reeled off the final eight points to easily win the set 25-13.

A 6-0 San Marcos run gave the Cougars an 8-2 lead in the second set, but the 'Cats battled back, as an Eichhorst service ace and kills by DiNardo, Mcnulty, and Osendorf pulled Chico State to within four at 10-6. San Marcos proceeded to take control of the contest with a 9-0 run, and though Prescott and Kirkby delivered late kills for the Wildcats, the Cougars rolled to the 25-15 victory.

Chico State fell behind 5-2 early in the third set, but multiple kills by Prescott and Mcnulty fueled a 6-3 run to even the contest at eight-all. San Marcos scored three straight to regain the lead and successfully kept the 'Cats at bay for the remainder of the set. The Cougars extended their advantage to 22-14, and though two Osendorf aces and kills by Prescott and Mcnulty kept Chico State alive, San Marcos was able to hold on to post the 25-19 win and the match sweep.

The Wildcats will be in the Bay Area Saturday for the back end of the weekend road trip, taking on Cal State East Bay at 3 p.m. Fans can follow the action online with Live Stats and live streaming video on the CCAA Network, with links available on the Wildcat Athletics website home page and on the volleyball schedule page.
