MARYSVILLE—A sizzling second-round 12-under-par 276 by the Chico State men's golf team set the stage for a three-team shootout for the 2022 Wildcat Classic crown. The Wildcats finished the two-round day in second place at 16-under par, three shots behind defending California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Champion and 25^th-ranked Sonoma State and one ahead of Simon Fraser. Holy Names is fourth at 7-under par and Cal State San Bernardino is the only other team in the 11-team field that ended the day under par at 1-under.
 
The Wildcats were led by Tyler Ashman, who carded consecutive 67s to finish the day 10-under par and two shots off the lead, held by Sonoma State's Griffin Pace, who posted scores of 66 and 66. Mark Noonan and Naoki Easterday also played big roles in the Wildcats' second-round effort, shooting 3-under par 69s, while Ben Mouser carded a 71. 
 
Noonan enters Tuesday's final round in a tie for 7^th in the 66-player field at 6-under. Easterday is alone in 14^th at 3-under par. Mouser is tied for 27^th at 2-over par, and Dakota Ochoa is tied for 42^nd at +4.
 
Chico State's "B" team also had quite a second circuit around the 6,880-yard track, shooting 5-under par, and sits in eighth place. Making their Chico State debuts, Landon Williams shot a 69 that included a hole out for two at the 440-yard, par-4 fourth, while Giacomo Sorrentino and Giuliano Kaminski carded 1-under par 71s. Travis Miller shot even par to wrap up the team's second-round scoring. Miller finished the day tied for 15^th at 1-under par. Kaminski (even) is tied for 21^st, Sorrentino (+2) tied for 27^th, Williams (+3) tied for 37^th, and Brayden Russo is in 61^st at 14-over.
