Offense avenges end of shutout streak

Wildcats the No. 2 seed in upcoming CCAA Tournament

The shutout streak is over, but the Chico State women's soccer team keeps rolling right along. The Wildcats snagged the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with a 4-1 drubbing of visiting Humboldt State Thursday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium.

Chico State, ranked No. 6 in the West Region entering play, improved to 10-2-5 overall and finished 6-1-4 in CCAA play by stretching its unbeaten streak to eight matches. Madison Parsons scored twice and Susanna Garcia and Camille Lidster added a goal apiece as the Wildcats out-shot the Lumberjacks 22-4 and posted 13 shots on goal.

The Wildcats will play in the second semifinal match of the CCAA Tournament next Friday at 4 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona against the winner of Sunday's Cal State East Bay-Stanislaus State showdown in Hayward. The winner of the match will play for the CCAA title and automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament that comes with it on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona.

Chico State grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Garcia's goal—a header set up by Kylie Martinez's perfect cross toward the far post from 30 yards out. But Humboldt State tied the match 10 minutes later, ending the Wildcats' seventh-match shutout streak. The Wildcats twice failed to get an attempted clearance out of the box, and on the third, try, the ball deflected off a Chico State player and right back into the box where the Lumberjacks' Kelsey Bess one-timed it into the top shelf to knot the score 1-1.

It didn't take long for the Wildcats to reclaim the lead for keeps. Lidster made it 2-1 by finishing off a quick strike. It started when Brynn Howard won a header and Parsons flicked it on to Lidster. She took one touch to her left and then hit a strike from 18 yards for her fourth goal of the campaign.

Parsons put the match away with two goals in the span of 3:01 midway through the second half. Her first goal was assisted by Summer Baron and Sarah Emigh and her second by Jordan Doukakis.
