CARSON—The 2021 Chico State women's soccer team is proving to be a resilient bunch. The Wildcats have lost just twice this season. Both times now, they've bounced back with a win. The team suffered its worst loss of the season Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay, but sprung back Sunday with a 1-0 victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Jordan Doukakis delivered the match-winning penalty kick in the 77th minute and Wildcats goalkeeper Emma Hofmann handled six saves in posting her fourth shutout.
The match featured the two NCAA Division II women's soccer coaches who most recently reached the 250-win milestone: Chico State's Kim Sutton and Cal State Dominguez Hills' Marine Cano. They've each now won 251 matches, tied for 20th among active coaches. Chico State improved to 6-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Toros dipped to 4-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the CCAA.
A hand ball set up the lone goal of the game. Kylie Martinez's corner bounced back out to Kelli Litchfield, who slipped the ball back to Martinez out wide. Martinez whipped the ball back into the box and a Cal State Dominguez Hills defender reached a hand up and deflected it, drawing a whistle from the referee, who pointed at the penalty spot.
Doukakis drew the assignment and calmly hit a left footed shot. The goalkeeper guessed the right direction and dove, but Doukakis' shot was struck hard and true, hitting the side netting behind the right post.
Madison Parsons led the Wildcats with three shots. Susanna Garcia and Doukakis had two apiece.
The Wildcats are at Cal State East Bay Thursday at 4:30 and then return to University Soccer Stadium to take on Stanislaus State next Sunday at 11:30 a.m. That is also Pack the Pantry weekend. Fans are encouraged to bring donations for the Chico State Basic Needs Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry.
