SAN FRANCISCO—The Chico State women's soccer team entered Sunday afternoon's match at San Francisco State looking for their first win there since 2007. The Wildcats were 0-6-1 there since, losing each of those six matches by a single goal, including each of their last five. They left nothing to chance this time around, winning 3-0 on goals from Susanna Garcia, Mackenzie Gill and Emelie Peraza.
Chico State improved to 7-2-1 overall and wrapped up a four-game road start to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action with a record of 3-1-0. San Francisco State fell to 2-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats scored 10 minutes into the match and never looked back. Gill pushed a loose ball by her defender and got around her for a cross on an early counter attack. Abbie Jones hammered a shot from 16 yards that crashed off the lower lip of the crossbar. It slammed to the turf in front of the net and Garcia rose to meet it upon its descent, heading it into the top shelf for a 1-0 lead.
Garcia drew a foul to set up the next goal in the 23
rd minute. Jordan Doukakis' free kick from 12 yards beyond the top-left corner of the 18-yard box landed in traffic right on top of the six. A scrum ensued until Sarah Emigh's poked attempt was popped back out to Gill, who rolled it home through traffic from six yards out.
Chico State put the match away 20:22 into the second half. Marissa Martin played Peraza into space down the left flank, and with the keeper out from her goal, Peraza popped a shot over her head and into the far-side netting for a 3-0 lead.
Wildcats goalkeeper Victoria Graham made three saves in earning her second shutout of the season.
The Wildcats finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots and 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Chico State will play its first two conference home matches next weekend, taking on Cal Poly Pomona (6-3-0, 2-1-0 CCAA) Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Cal State San Bernardino (2-6-1, 0-3-0) Sunday morning at 11:30.
