ARCATA—Chloe King was kicking hard and frequently her mother's belly, Camille Lidster's mother was still nine-and-a-half months from introducing her daughter to the world, and Kim Sutton was in the midst of her sixth and final season as the head women's soccer coach at Humboldt State the last time the Chico State women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit on the road. Until Friday.
Chico State trailed Humboldt State 2-0 at College Creek Field in Arcata before King, Abbie Jones, and Lidster each scored in a 33-minute span to lift the Wildcats to a stirring 3-2 victory.
The Wildcats last erased a two-goal deficit on the road in a 3-2 overtime victory at Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 17, 2000, during Bob Russ' final season leading the program. They had not done it at home since 2013 when they rallied to beat Cal Baptist 3-2 in their season opener and then came back from 2-0 down to tie UC San Diego later in the campaign.
When Lidster went top shelf from 14 yards out for the match winner in the 61
st minute, the Wildcats nearly blew the roof off the Chico State bench in celebration.
Chico State, ranked No. 6 in the West Region by the United Soccer Coaches, improved to 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with its seventh win in its last eight matchups against Humboldt State.
Humboldt State slipped to 1-4-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the CCAA.
The host Lumberjacks grabbed the lead just 5:25 in. Two Chico State defenders moved to clear a low corner kick away from the near post. It somehow deflected through to Kelsey Bess who blasted it into the back of the net from just inside the six-yard box.
A giveaway in Chico State territory led to the second Lumberjacks goal. The ball was passed ahead to Lindsey Stoner on the left flank and she made a nice move to create space, cut inside, and ripped a shot inside the near post for a 2-0 lead just 19:47 into the match.
Aided by a goalkeeping gaffe, the Wildcats cut the lead in half in the 28
th minute. A long Chico State pass rolled into the box and the Lumberjacks' keeper left her goal to trap it. Instead of immediately clearing the ball, she attempted to dribble away from Susanna Garcia. She could not and Garcia won the ball just outside of the right edge of the 18-yard box.
With Talbert in full retreat, Garcia quickly crossed the ball and King, completing a run toward the far post, one-timed a shot inside the left post.
The Wildcats knotted the score just 2:49 into the second stanza. King and Jordan Doukakis ganged up on a Lumberjacks player who took a throw-in deep in Chico State territory and King got the takeaway. She quickly attacked up the left flank on the dribble, beating one defender before attempting to connect with Mackenzie Gill making a run toward the top-right corner of the 18-yard box. A Lumberjacks defender got a head on the ball but it fell to Lidster in the center of the pitch about 25 yards out. Lidster maneuvered around one defender before pushing a pass outside to Gill whose cross along the top of the six-yard box found its way to Jones. The savvy senior had snuck around the back of her defender at the far post and then cut back inside and in front of her. Jones only got a piece of an attempted volley but the ball fell to her feet and she quickly hammered it into the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Thirteen minutes later the lead belonged to the Wildcats following Lidster's second match-winner of the season.
King again got things started, stealing the ball from a defender near the left corner flag and then attacking the side of the 18-yard box on the dribble. She attempted to connect with Garcia in front of the near post but a Lumberjacks defender poked the ball away. Lidster was patrolling the top of the 18 unmarked and when the ball squirted her way, she ran onto it and hit a blast top shelf from 14 yards out for the match winner.
Chico State out-shot the Lumberjacks 24-10 and earned a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. Each team earned five corner kicks. Lidster led the way with five shots. King got off four. Wildcats goalkeeper Victoria Graham was credited with six saves.
