Wildcats’ upset bid spoiled by two late goals

Doukakis scores second goal of the season

TURLOCK—Twenty minutes from their biggest victory of the 2019 season, the Chico State women's soccer team instead saw host Stanislaus State score twice in a little over three minutes and fell to the Warriors 2-1 at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

Chico State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on Jordan Doukakis' second strike of the season. Defender Alexi Vontsolos ran on to a clearance near midfield and passes ahead to Doukakis on the left flank. The junior played a beautiful give-and-go with Abbie Jones, setting her free down the sideline. Doukakis dribbled toward the touch line at an angle, making her way deep into the 18-yard box. She appeared set to cut the ball back toward the PK spot but instead hit a blast toward the near post. The goalkeeper, poised to defend against a cross, attempted a diving stop but only got a piece of the ball, deflecting into the near side netting.

The assist was Jones' second of the season.

The Wildcats hoped that goal would stand. A win Wednesday against the Warriors, which entered the match ranked No. 7 in the West Region, would have given their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and NCAA Tournament hopes a big lift.

Stanislaus State was relentless, however, banging out 24 shots. They finally found the back of the net with their 19th when Ilena Rivera found the far upper-V from 25 yards out in the 73rd minute, assisted by Julia Cummings.

The match did not stay tied for long as Sadie Ortiz hit the match winner, finding the low right corner from 16 yards out in the 76th minute.

Chico State slipped to 8-6-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State improved to 12-3 overall and 6-3-0 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats are tied with Cal State San Marcos for sixth in the CCAA standings at 1.33 points per match, slightly ahead of Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills (1.25 ppm). The top six teams in the final regular season standings will advance to the CCAA Tournament.

After playing seven of its first nine CCAA matches of this season on the road, Chico State will now be home for their final three of the regular season. The Wildcats will host Sonoma State Sunday at 11:30 a.m., Cal State East Bay on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., and Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9.
