The Chico State women's soccer team has hit a rough patch, both in terms of its schedule and a four-match losing skid. Sunday, the Wildcats surrendered a pair of goals in the final 10:04 and fell 3-1 against 13
th-ranked Sonoma State.
Still, they can take solace in this: according to unofficial Chico State Sports Information Department calculations, the Wildcats remain in control of their postseason destiny. With wins in their final two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches this Thursday and Saturday at University Soccer Stadium, it appears they would finish with a points-per game of 1.5, which would put them in fifth or sixth place in the final standings. The top six teams will advance to the CCAA Tournament.
The Wildcats were hoping to gain valuable points Sunday against Sonoma State, but they knew a result would not come easily against their third opponent ranked among the West Region's top five in their last four matches.
Camille Lidster's equalizer just 15 seconds after Sonoma State snagged the lead on a first-half penalty kick had the match level late into the second half. But the Seawolves struck in the 80
th and 84
th minute to win 3-1, improving to 13-2-0 overall and 9-0-0 in the CCAA.
Chico State slipped to 8-7-1 overall and 4-6-0 in the CCAA.
Lidster's wicked strike was the Wildcats' biggest highlight of the day. The true freshman threaded her way through a number of Sonoma State defenders and then unleashed a left-footed blast from 20 yards that rattled around the woodwork of the far upper-V before settling into the back of the net. The goal was her third of the season.
Chico State goalkeeper Victoria Graham made a pair of spectacular second-half saves to keep the match tied and finished with eight saves on the day.
Chico State hosts Cal State East Bay Thursday at 7 p.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place at University Soccer Stadium. Senior Day festivities will take place immediately prior to Saturday's match.
