’Cats play to second straight scoreless draw

True freshman goalkeeper Graham makes seven saves in collegiate debut

The Chico State women's soccer team finished its first weekend of play in 2018 with mixed feelings and identical results.

The Wildcats played 13th-ranked Colorado School of Mines to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium, extending their home unbeaten streak to 16 games, just two days after finishing with the same result against defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion Regis University.

Chico State's defense shined once again. Making her collegiate debut, true freshman goalkeeper Vik Graham turned away seven shots to earn the shutout.

It marked just the second time in the past 23 matches that Mines has been held without a goal. They had scored 58 times in their 22 preceding matches, including a 3-0 victory over San Francisco State in their season opener Friday.

Chico State is now 0-0-2, while Mines is 1-0-1.

Center back Abbie Jones and left back Korie Bozart played all 110 minutes to help key the Wildcats' defensive effort.

The Wildcats' best scoring chance came late in the second half on a corner kick. Susanna Garcia leaped high to get a head on the ball just as the Mines goalkeeper attempted to grab it. It bounced toward the far post where a scrum ensued before the keeper could secure it.

Graham, on the other hand, was only seriously tested twice. She came up clutch both times.

The second came with just four seconds remaining in regulation. Taylor McRae's low liner from 30 yards was deflected over to the feet of Peyton Sanders, who had an unbothered look from about eight yards in front of the far post. But Graham dove to her left to punch the blast wide.

The Wildcats will wrap up the home portion of their non-conference slate Thursday at 7 p.m. at home against Seattle Pacific. The Falcons, picked by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference coaches to finished third in the GNAC this season, are off to a 2-0-0 start thanks to 2-0 victories over Cal Poly Pomona and MSU Moorhead.
