The Chico State women's soccer team turned in a dominating performance for its third straight win Saturday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium. Erin Woods and Jamie Ikeda both scored first-half bangers from long distance and the Wildcats' defense limited Dominican to just two shots in a 2–0 victory.
Chico State is now 3-0-1 and freshman goalkeeper Claire Abele has posted clean sheets in two of the last three matches heading into California Collegiate Athletic Association play, which begins next weekend when the Wildcats travel to face UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos. Dominican dipped to 1-2-0.
Woods, who entered the day with a CCAA-high four goals, struck again in the sixth minute Saturday. The junior is playing up top for the first time in her career this season and—depending on the way you look at it—is making Head Coach Kim Sutton look like a genius for changing Woods' position, or making people wonder why she waited two years to do it.
Woods stole a pass just above the top of the box, turned, and hit a rocket into the left upper-V from 28 yards out just 5:15 into the match.
Ikeda did her best impression of Woods in the 33
rd minute. Kylie Martinez set things in motion with a cross, ticketed for the six-yard box. The ball was deflected by a Penguins defender and bounced out to Ikeda, who took a touch, gathered herself, and hit a blast off the left post and in for her first goal of the season.
Meanwhile, Chico State's defense was nearly perfect. The Wildcats limited Dominican to just one corner kick and kept Abele out of danger for much of the day. Abele saved both shots that came her way.
