LA JOLLA, Calif.—Getting a result at 19
th-ranked UC San Diego Friday night was tall order for the Chico State women's soccer team. The Tritons had won 14 consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season matches, and 20 straight against conference opposition entering the night.
The Wildcats entered the showdown riding a three-match winning streak of their own, and would need to play at least as well as they had during that stretch to have a chance. Unfortunately for Chico State, a 158-second span of struggles in the first half erased what chance they may have had, leading to a 3–0 defeat.
Up until that point, the Wildcats were going toe-to-toe with the Tritons. They fired off four of the matches' 10 shots during a scintillating first 28 minutes. But UC San Diego broke the seal in the 29
th minute, and struck again 2:38 later for a 2–0 lead.
Juliana Los came off the bench and attempted to cut the lead in half just before intermission, but her shot was saved. The Wildcats had a few more chances to get back into the match in the second half, including a pair of early corners. The second resultd in a Pooja Patel header that was saved as well.
The Tritons put the match away with another goal in the 51
st minute.
Chico State dipped to 3-2-0 with the loss in the CCAA opener for both squads. UC San Diego, which ran the CCAA table unbeaten and untied last season for the first time since Sonoma State in 1998, improved to 4-2-0.
The Wildcats will attempt to get back on track Sunday when they travel to take on Cal State San Marcos at 11:30 a.m.
