ARCATA, Calif.—Sometimes the final third turns out to be the whole enchilada. It certainly left the Chico State women's soccer team with a collective stomachache Friday, and a 2–1 loss to Humboldt State. Despite a sizeable advantage in shots and 10–1 edge in corner kicks, the Wildcats lacked the necessary quality in the final third on each end at College Creek Field.
The Wildcats' out-shot the hosts 13-6, but did not display the class to put one in the back of the net until Lia Kilgore followed up Pooja Patel's banger off the crossbar in the waning seconds.
Meanwhile, Humboldt State scored twice on just six shots. The Lumberjacks opened the scoring with Lindsay Stoner's strike in the 37
th minute, and doubled their lead with Alex Jenkins' header in the 68
th minute.
Humboldt State goalkeeper Katelin Talbert made six saves and the Lumberjacks team was credited with saving three balls off the line.
The Wildcats finally broke through in the 90
th minute. Kilgore's goal was the true freshman's second of the season. Patel now has 19 career assists, tied for the third most in the history of the program with Lisa Webster (2008-11), Sarah Stoney (1990 & 1993), and Amy Swanson (2001-04).
Now 5-4-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Chico State will travel down the coast tomorrow in preparations for Sunday's 11:30 a.m. showdown at Sonoma State.
Humboldt State improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the CCAA.
