’Cats sweep Seawolves to run win streak to 11

Good starts continue to net great results for Chico State

ROHNERT PARK – "Pressure! Pushing down on (teams), pressing down on you, no man ask for. Under pressure! That brings a building down…"

That Queen song, featuring David Bowie, could be the Chico State baseball team's anthem thus far this season. The Wildcats keep ratcheting up the pressure on their opponents and winning games. They grabbed early leads in both ends of a doubleheader sweep at rival Sonoma State Saturday, improving to 18-4 overall and 11-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with their 11th straight win. Chico State won the first game 5–3 and the second 10-2.

The Wildcats' success has been predicated upon applying pressure. Ranked No. 19 in the nation entering the weekend, they've now scored first in 21 of their 22 games this season.

The Wildcats scored in the first inning of both games.

They grabbed a 1–0 lead in the first inning of the first game when Cameron Santos stole home.

Sonoma State recovered and eventually took the lead, but the Wildcats rallied in the eight. Dillon Kelley's two-out, two-run double gave them the lead, and Josh Falco followed with a double to drive in Kelley and give Chico State the final 5–3 advantage.

Grant Wright collected his first win of the
season in Saturday's first game.

Grant Wright earned his first win of the season with three no-hit innings of relief of start Cam Greenough. Anthony Baleto retired the final six batters for his third save of the season. Greenough gave up three runs on five hits in four frames.

Kelley and Cortez had two hits apiece to pace the Wildcats' offense.

The Wildcats scored three times in the first in the nightcap, taking advantage of a two-out throwing error to post a crooked number. Sonny Cortez singled and Andru Cardenas walked to seed the rally. Kelley drove in the first run with a fielders' choice grounder. With two down and the bases loaded, Cody Snider hit a grounder to the shortstop that he threw away, allowing Kelley and Falco to score for a 3–0 lead.

Sonoma State scored unearned runs in the first and third to trim the lead to 3–2. But reliever Stuart Bradley shut the door on the Seawolves with two and two-thirds no-hit frames to collect his second win in as many days and improve to 3-0. Starter Casey Costello went just three-and-a-third innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits. Jae Wagner pitched the seventh to close it out.

Chico State scored three times in the fifth to go up 6–2 and then blew the game open in the top of the seventh with a four-run rally.

Cardenas and Kelley led the 11-hit attack with two apiece. Seven different Wildcats drove in runs.

The Wildcats will attempt to secure their third straight four-game series sweep to begin CCAA play Sunday at 11 a.m.
