Make it a dozen

Wildcats complete 4-game sweep of Sonoma State, run win steak to 12

ROHNERT PARK – A dozen donuts certainly makes for a nice Sunday, but for the Chico State baseball team, even that isn't as sweet as a four-game sweep of rival Sonoma State.

The Wildcats won their 12th straight game to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play, smashing the Seawolves 10–3 Sunday at Seawolf Diamond. Marcos Valencia broke the game open with a three-run homer, and Cody Snider and Jerrett Maas drove in two runs apiece for 19th-ranked Chico State, which improved to 19-4.

After sweep four-game sets from Stanislaus State, San Francisco State, and now Sonoma State to open conference play, the Wildcats now lead second-place Cal State East Bay by five games, Cal State Monterey Bay by six, and Sonoma State by seven.

The Wildcats jumped out to an 8–0 lead with two runs in the second and six more in the third, and got another excellent outing from their bullpen in the blowout victory. Andrew Schantz (2-0) earned the win with two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings, Mikey Wright added two innings of scoreless relief, and Grant Larson pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Chico State's relief corps combined to go 4-0 with two saves and a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings of work during the series.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the second. Josh Falco doubled leading off the innings and Snider singled to put runners on the corners. Maas drove in the game's first run with a bunt, and later, Casey Henderson's sacrifice fly made it 2–0.

Marcos Valencia hit his 2nd homer of the season.

They took complete control of the game in the third. Andru Cardenas reached on a throwing error and Cameron Santos followed with a bunt single to start the inning. Kelley plated Cardenas with a bunt before Falco followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Snider singled through the right side to bring home another run. Maas made it 5–0 with an RBI grounder. Valencia followed with a three-run blast–his second big fly of the year–and the Wildcats were suddenly in front 8–0.

Snider drove in another run in the fourth and later scored on a passed ball to make it 10–1.

Sonny Cortez led Chico State with three hits. Santos was 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base and Falco was 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice

The Wildcats will welcome their first CCAA South Division opponent to town next weekend when Cal Poly Pomona visits for a three-game set. The Broncos, ranked No. 6 in the preseason national poll, are 13-10 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon and single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
