For the first three minutes of the match, it looked as though the Chico State women's soccer team was primed for a high-scoring Sunday. As it turned out, Juliana Los's 42
nd-minute strike was the only goal they would need.
Â
Los's first goal as a Wildcat and a dominating defensive effort lifted Chico State to a 1–0 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino. The Wildcats are now 7-0 at home this season and unbeaten (10-0-1) in their past 11 matches at University Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Wildcats allowed only six shots, none of which had to be saved by goalkeeper Claire Abele. However, she did rise to the occasion on a 63
rd-minute penalty kick, forcing the potential equalizer high and off the crossbar.
Korie Bozart's cross set up the Wildcats' goal.
Â
Chico State nearly scored three times in the first three minutes of the match. Erin Woods hit the crossbar 34 seconds in and follow tries from inside the box by Brielynn Tovani and Jordan Doukakis were blocked. Woods missed just wide with a header 2:20 in. And Tovani had her rocket saved bravely at the near post by defender Nicki Argentieri.
Â
All nine first-half shots were taken by the Wildcats, as well as eight of the period's nine corner kicks.
Â
Los took the ninth one and made it count. Korie Bozart's cross bounced across the box to Brooke Coelho, 10 yards out from the far post. She attempted to shoot the ball, but didn't get much of it. Instead, it rolled ahead to Los, who was at the top of the 6-yard box. The Saint Mary's transfer, originally from Tasman, New Zealand, turned and fired inside the right post for the deciding goal.
Â
Chico State improved to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while moving up into seventh in the CCAA standings. The table's top six at the end of the regular season will play in the CCAA Tournament.
Â
The Wildcats hope to keep moving up, and keep their home streaks intact, next weekend. Cal State East Bay will be in town Friday afternoon, and Cal State Monterey Bay visits Sunday, which is also Senior Day for the Wildcats.
Â
The Wildcats finished with a 14-6 advantage in shots and 10-3 edge in corner kicks.Â
