The Chico State women's soccer team extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 matches Friday, but they certainly left the pitch wishing for more following a 1-1 draw with Cal State East Bay at University Soccer Stadium.
The Wildcats learned earlier in the week of their No. 4 ranking in the West Region and need to make up some ground to qualify for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. A victory, which they had plenty of opportunities to secure, would have been a boon to both pursuits.
Instead, they remain .500 in CCAA play at 4-4-1, and moved to 8-5-1 overall. Cal State East Bay earned just its second CCAA result, improving to 4-10-1 overall and 1-7-1 in conference play.
The Wildcats let a prime opportunity to take a first-half lead slip away when Pooja Patel's PK was saved with a dive to the right by Pioneers' goalkeeper Cheyanne Foster.
The Wildcats celebrate Sarah Emigh's goal.
Chico State finally did open the scoring in the 65
th minute. Jordan Doukakis' corner bounced to Sarah Emigh at the top of the 18-yard box and the freshman's header flew over the keepers' fingertips and into the top shelf. It was her third goal of the season and Doukakis' second assist on a corner in the last three contests.
The lead did not last long, however. Pioneers' striker Abby Buitrago intercepted a square ball played at the top of the box and dribbled around three defenders on a looping run toward the right post. When she arrived, she hit a rocket just inside the far post to even the score at 74:08.
That was it for the scoring despite the Wildcats' 19-7 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Chico State, which has three matches remaining in the regular season, wraps up its home campaign Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. match against Cal State Monterey Bay. The Wildcats' three-woman senior class of Courtney Sharrah, Pooja Patel, and Brooke Coelho will be honored prior to the match in a ceremony scheduled to begin at approximately 11:15.
