Doukakis keys Wildcats’ comeback

Women’s soccer team runs home unbeaten streak to 10

Backed into an early corner, the Chico State women's soccer team used the corner kick to get out. The Wildcats scored on a pair of Jordan Doukakis corner kicks before the redshirt freshman notched her first collegiate goal for a final 3–1 margin of victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona Friday night at University Soccer Stadium.

Now 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Wildcats opened a four-match home stretch by improving to 6-0 at home this season. They are unbeaten (9-0-1) in their last 10 home games dating back to last season.

Cal Poly Pomona, which opened the scoring in the 15th minute, fell to 9-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the CCAA.

Chico State leveled the match in the 26th minute. Doukakis' corner was punched high and straight up into the air by the Broncos goalkeeper, and after in pin-balled around in the box, Nicole Marquez volleyed it home just inside the right post. The goal was the true freshman Marquez's first as a Wildcat.

They took the lead for good exactly 10 minutes later when Doukakis delivered a corner to the near post and Sarah Emigh headed it into the back of the net.

Doukakis put the match away in the 74th minute, this time on a free kick. Her banger into the box from 40 yards out took one bounced and skimmed off the head of a defender and into the net.

The Wildcats finished the match with a 15-9 advantage in shots and 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Claire Abele also had a notable night, making five saves in the win.

The Wildcats are back in action Sunday when they host Cal State San Bernardino at 2 p.m.
