The Chico State Athletics Department has thrived since making a successful transition to the California Collegiate Athletic Association nearly two decades ago. Perhaps no program has taken better advantage of the move than men's golf. The Wildcats five top-three team finishes and a trio of medalists at the NCAA Championships in the past 14 years to prove it.
Colby Dean finished 23rd at the InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic as
a freshman and 15th last season as a sophomore.
The community of Chico gets but one chance a year to see the Wildcats in action locally, and for the 2016-17 season, that time comes this Monday and Tuesday when they host the InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic at Butte Creek Country Club.
The public is encouraged to come witness some of the top collegiate golfers in the nation in action. Tee times are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. both days. Monday's action with feature each of the 16 teams playing two rounds (36 holes). They'll finish Tuesday with one final circuit.
The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 6 in the nation and coming off a win and runner-up finish in their first two tournaments of the inaugural season under new Head Coach Nick Green. They are one of three top-25 teams in the field: California Baptist, coached by former Wildcats Head Coach T.L. Brown, is No. 12; Cal State Monterey Bay is ranked No. 13. Six more teams received votes in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll.
