Alameda, Calif. – The Chico State men's golf team opened play Monday at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, hosted by Cal State East Bay, competing in an 18-team field. The Wildcats completed 36 holes on Monday, posting team scores of 286 and 287 to sit in seventh place at 3-under par. Cal State San Marcos leads the tournament at 10-under heading into Tuesday's final round.
Through two rounds, Chico State ranks second in the field in par-3 scoring at +5 and sits inside the top five in total pars made. The Wildcats look to improve on par 5 scoring as they head into the final round and look to climb the leaderboard.
Freshman Ty Weaver delivered a breakout performance, carding the lowest round of his collegiate career with a 3-under 69 in the opening round, capped by birdies on his final two holes. He followed with a 2-under 70 in round two, finishing strong once again with birdies on four of his last five holes. Weaver ranks second in the 102-player field in par-4 scoring and third in total birdies with 11 on the day. He currently sits tied for eighth place.
Senior Naoki Easterday opened with a 4-under 68, carding just one bogey while going 33-35. He added a 1-over 73 in the second round to sit in a tie for 18th place.
Junior Cooper Hambrick recorded rounds of 73-73 and is tied for 42nd place.
Freshman Vineet Vallamsetty shot 76 (+4) in the first round and responded with a 1-under 71 in round two, birdieing three of his final five holes. He is tied for 50th place.
Senior Giuliano Kaminski, making his first appearance in the lineup this season, posted rounds of 78 (+6) and 74 (+2). Junior Alex Lemmon, competing as an individual, carded rounds of 75 and 78.
The Wildcats return Tuesday for the final round with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, entering the day seven strokes off the lead as they look to finish the tournament strong.
